Steve Brine is leading a local campaign which seeks to give elderly and vulnerable pedestrians more time to cross the road.

The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP has spoken to a number of his constituents who share his concern that the timings of crossings are too short, and is writing formally to the Chief Executives of both Winchester City Council and Eastleigh Borough Council to demand action.

Steve said: "I certainly appreciate that it can take longer for children (I have two small ones myself), the elderly and disabled to cross the road and I think this is an important campaign.

"I know from speaking to colleagues that the coalition Government takes the safety of pedestrians extremely seriously, and in this instance it is up to local authorities to ensure their pedestrian crossings provide everyone with enough time to cross the road safely.

"What the Department for Transport does provide however, is a range of suggested timings for crossing in its guidance to local councils, including our own councils covering Winchester & Chandler's Ford. The DfT actually recommends that where a crossing may be used by a large number of older people or those with mobility issues, for example outside residential care homes, this should be taken into account, and it with that in mind that I am taking action."

Steve Brine, who won a national Parliamentary Road Safety Campaigner award earlier this year, which recognised his energetic work across Winchester & Chandler's Ford, went on to say that he is looking forward to hearing more in the New Year.
