Retrofit Green Deal

Steve Brine called for a new Green Deal on Tuesday 23rd April as he took part in an emergency debate on climate change.

The Winchester & Chandler’s Ford MP told the House that while the protests of the past week had inconvenienced few of his constituents, he shared the concern over the ‘grave emissions situation’ we face.

Addressing the Minister, Claire Perry MP, he said: “One thing we’ve got to face up to is the poor energy efficiency of our existing, not our new, but our existing homes… it is going to require some kind of new retrofit Green Deal, if we are going to move the dial… and lower those emissions.”

The Minister agreed that the focus on retrofitting is hugely important. She said: “He and I put ourselves on the green deal Bill Committee because we believed there was a way to incentivise people—if someone retrofits their home, their energy bills go down, and they often get a higher sale price or a lower running cost.”

The original Green Deal, which came into law under David Cameron’s premiership, was a policy initiative that gave homeowners, landlords and tenants the opportunity to pay for energy efficient home improvements through the savings on their energy bills.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
