Steve Brine celebrated the success of a local student at a prestigious event in Parliament this week.
The local MP joined Winchester’s Rebecca Nye, who studies at City College Southampton, and a host of other students and MPs at the Association of Colleges’ Student of the Year Awards reception at the House of Commons.
The award celebrates the achievements and successes of exceptional students who stand out from the crowd and have either shown academic excellence, contributed to their local economy or overcome difficulty to progress. The award is open to any student of an AoC member college, and is not limited by age, level or course.
Rebecca was named runner-up in the Young Student of the Year category. She has excelled both academically and socially in a traditionally male-dominated area of the theatre world. Not many women enter the technical side of theatre and entertainment work, especially production management. She entered the area with an ability to completely hold her own. She was willing to get stuck in with every job and every aspect of her course. The fact that she pushed herself as far as possible shows just how passionate she is about the industry.
Following the visit, Steve said: “I was delighted to meet Rebecca in the House as she celebrated her special achievement. The further education sector offers the opportunity to transform people’s lives and this recognition is evidence of the excellent work that Rebecca has carried out and her achievements in college during the year.”
David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “The standard of entries this year was incredibly high and each of the students deserve praise for the contribution they make to their colleges as well as the contribution they are bringing to their local community.
“All the students have done fantastically well to reach this stage so special mention must go to their colleges who do fantastic work daily to harness their skills and prepare them for the world of work.”
