New Queens Head

Twenty-one new energy-efficient homes are well under way on the site of the former New Queen's Head pub in Stanmore.

Today Cllr Caroline Horrill, Winchester City Council's Portfolio Holder for Housing, provided Steve Brine, local MP for the Winchester and Chandler's Ford constituency, with a sneak preview of the first eight dwellings due to be completed by December 2015.

The homes are built with energy-efficient materials and together with photo-voltaic panels on the roofs they will be economic to heat and meet code level 5 for energy and code level 4 for water. In addition they are designed to be easily adapted for people with restricted mobility.

Steve Brine commented on his visit: "I'm a keen supporter of energy-efficient homes and I wanted to see the progress in what steps have been taken to minimise their impact on the environment.

"I very much support the Council's on-going commitment with its programme to provide 300 new council homes in the District."

As part of the contract the footpath between the new houses and the neighbouring church is being improved, made accessible and extended across the recreation ground of the Carroll Centre and to link with other footpaths.

Cllr Caroline Horrill, the City Council's Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "These new homes are designed to high quality standards to reflect the Council's demanding requirements, both with regard to planning policy and affordable housing policy.

"A local lettings plan has been agreed for the homes offering priority for people with a local connection to Stanmore."
