Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP, Steve Brine, has been elected to serve on a powerful Commons committee.

He was elected, by his fellow MPs, as a member of the Digital, Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee for the new Parliament.

It is the first time Steve has served on a select committee since the 2010-2015 Parliament, since when he has been on the Government front-bench.

Steve says; "Coming from a professional background before entering Parliament of the media, and then working in the sport industry, this was a natural fit for me and is a committee I have always wanted to serve on.

"It was especially pleasing to be elected by my peers and I know all members are keen to get on with our work and agreeing a forward programme. I expect, and hope, the future of public service broadcasting will be a key element of that alongside work around misinformation online."

The committee is set-up, under the chairmanship of Julian Knight MP, to scrutinise the work of the Department led by Oliver Dowden as Secretary of State. It comprises MPs from the key Westminster parties; Conservative, Labour and SNP.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
