Taxi drivers despair at station changes

Winchester and Chandler' Ford MP, Steve Brine, has met with a group of taxi drivers who have raised concerns regarding changes to how ranking works at Winchester Railway Station.

Last month South Western Railway announced it's partnership with Wintax which meant the taxi rank directly outside the main entrance would only be available to pre-booked Wintax drivers. Other council-licensed taxis have been moved to a rank on the other side of the road.

A number of these drivers have raised concerns with Winchester City Council and their local MP citing not only an impact on business but safety concerns for customers crossing the busy Station Hill.

Steve said : "Final stop on a long day - time with some of Winchester’s taxi drivers at the city’s railway station. Big changes have taken place in recent months, which constituents will have noticed, and there’s some unhappiness reported to me. I am talking to all and trying to understand the situation."

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
