Shadow Minister for Charities visits Alresford to speak to local voluntary organisations at special conference.

Community Action Hampshire and the SCA (Institute of Social Enterprise) hosted a special conference in Alresford today (Friday 12 March 2010).

The Third Sector and the Next Government, which was held at Old Alresford Place, was billed as a pre-election event to explore the thinking of each political party about the future of the third sector.

Prospective Winchester MP Steve Brine invited Shadow Charities Minister, Nick Hurd MP, to take part in the event alongside Dr Alan Whitehead MP (Southampton Test) and outgoing Winchester MP Mark Oaten.  Each MP spoke for 15-20 minutes before taking questions and a general panel discussion followed.

Speaking after the event Steve Brine said; “I was really pleased to get Nick Hurd here for this important event.  My party has some really strong proposals for strengthening voluntary organisations and charities, known collectively as the ‘Third Sector’, as part of our plan to build a stronger society and held mend Britain’s broken society.  Nick passionately believes in the proposals we are putting forward in this area and I know he would make a real impact in Government if we are elected, something even Dr Whitehead acknowledged at the event.  I was good also to team up with Mark Oaten who we share a lot of good ideas with.

“The Winchester area has a blooming and diverse voluntary sector and long may that continue.  I know our plans to make it easier to run a charity, get more resources into them (both in time and money) and make it easier to do business with the state will really help local organisations and I cannot wait to help them in this way under a new Conservative Government.”
