Nearly two million people have now fled Ukraine as the Russian invasion continues and MPs in the House of Commons have continued to press Ministers for clearer routes for refugees.
Steve Brine has been amongst them and following on from questioning the Home Secretary last week, Mr Brine quizzed the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, on the Government’s “Humanitarian sponsorship pathway”.
Following an outpouring of support in Winchester and Chandler’s Ford, which culminated in a donation drive at Hursley Parish Hall last weekend, Steve Brine spoke about how “Many constituents say to me they just feel helpless, they want to do something and I don’t doubt – many have already been in touch – the “Humanitarian sponsorship pathway” will find its way to Winchester…”
Mr Gove informed the Hampshire MP that more details on the scheme will be release in the coming days, but went onto say “The single most important thing that any individual can do at the moment is donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee, understandably the case that people want to see goods of a humanitarian nature flown to the Polish border, it is the nature of the support that we need to give that it is more effective actually to raise money to give it the DEC and others.”
