Steve Brine has offered his congratulations after Alresford man Ben Wood joined friends in a unicycle ride for the neo-natal unit at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

Ben rode the Itchen Way, from St Catherine's Hill to Woodmill in Southampton with Tim Dicker, Jody Wood and Alex Laidlaw, none of whom had ridden unicycles before, and Alex's dad Ian, who followed on two wheels with a mobile collection box.

On a very awkward route, there was only one mishap as Alex and his unicycle ended up in a canal, but both were fished out and completed the journey and enjoyed a well-deserved ice cream.

Ben, who then cycled all the way back to Alresford, decided to raise funds for the unit after his son, Noah, now three, was born nine days early and had to spend time on the unit. A total of £1681.35 was raised, which will now buy equipment for the unit, which looks after sick and premature babies.

Steve said: "What an effort! It is challenging enough taking this route on two wheels, let alone one, and I send all my congratulations to Ben and his team."
