In normal times, our MP would welcome a steady stream of schools, colleges, and various other constituency groups to Westminster.

While that is not possible at the moment, Steve Brine has come up with a special programme of events to give his constituents a visit to the House of Commons.

His new “Visit Westminster Virtually” evening’s promise a glimpse behind normally closed doors and include a Q&A session with the MP himself. The 2021 series kicked off this week (Tuesday) with a large group from the Friends of Winchester Cathedral.

Steve Brine says; "I really miss meeting groups from the constituency coming to Westminster and that is going to be the case for a little while yet.

“I hope these new virtual visits, which I see as a form of modern town hall meeting in many respect will appeal and be something constituents will enjoy.

“It was lovely to welcome the Friends for our first event. We had a lively conversation with much to discuss.”

Chair of the Friends, Bruce Parker, added; “We know our online talks and lectures have been a lifeline to some of our members during the pandemic. Steve is a great supporter of the Friends and for him to have invited us into the Palace of Westminster in this way broke new grounds. It was a delight.”

150 members of the Friends, which celebrates its 90th birthday this year, logged onto the event.

If you run a local organisation, no matter how large or small, you can book your place and give your members a different experience.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
