The University of Winchester has won a top award this week as the People & Planet Green League placed it 22nd out of 142 British campuses.

The Green League is the only league table showing environmental performance of British universities. Areas which improved at the University of Winchester this year included recycling, student engagement and energy and carbon emissions.

Tommy Geddes, Deputy Vice Chancellor, said: "We're delighted with the results of the Green League 2011. We take our responsibility for reducing our environmental impact very seriously and have made significant progress in reducing our carbon emissions over the past couple of years.

"Sustainability has become a pressing concern on campus and I'm proud of the commitment and hard work that our staff and students have shown. The University is leading environmental change here in Winchester and will continue to drive ahead with the green agenda."

Winchester MP Steve Brine said: "I'm really pleased that our local Uni has done so well in this prestigious table. Obviously, there is so much going on right now in terms of the green agenda, particularly with the recent fourth carbon budget, and the Energy Bill committee which I am sitting on.

"Winchester is very much blessed with a number of fantastic green organisations, and I am delighted our university is also leading from the front."

This year Winchester Student Union was also ranked by the National Union of Students as one of the greenest student unions in the country in the 2011 Green Impact Awards, attaining a gold award for the second year running.
