Steve Brine is backing Gibraltar as a group of MPs seeks to clarify the UK position on territorial waters.

Following a summer of turmoil for residents of the Rock, with numerous border delays and incursions by the Spanish Guardia Civil into Gibraltarian maritime territory, Steve Brine is supporting a Commons motion to be tabled by David Morris MP on Wednesday 16th October.

Steve Brine said: "This Ten Minute Rule Motion defines Gibraltarian territorial waters for the first time, at 3 nautical miles from the coast. Various treaties give countries and territories the right to claim up to 12 miles but the Government of Gibraltar has only ever laid claim to 3.

"We believe this bill will clarify our position and give Gibraltar the confidence that comes from knowing you have backing of a major country like the United Kingdom."

The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP has been contacted by constituents and ex-pats with local links over the summer with various problems which have been created, and Steve has made strong representations to the Foreign Office on their behalf.

"Clearly this is not going to change the world in one fell swoop, but I do feel this expression is important and I am delighted David Morris has started this momentum."
