Speaking in Justice Questions, the Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP, who is a member of the Justice Select Committee, asked Damian Green, Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice to outline the Government's plans for reducing the number of young people within the criminal justice system.
In addition, he also raised a recent Select Committee visit to YOI Hindley, in Lancashire, where they found out about the problems caused when young offenders leave the 'secure estate' and return to their communities.
Mr Green explained that the reduction of young people in the criminal justice system 'continues to be a priority' and mentioned a number of initiatives and programmes the Coaltion has brought in.
He also told Steve that the Youth Justice Board, which the government works closely with, is also working to improve resettlement on release from custody by encouraging local services to work more collaboratively to ensure that young people have suitable accommodation, which is an essential step in stopping them reoffending.
