Local MP Steve Brine dropped into Winchester's first Covid-19 vaccination centre thus afternoon.

The facility is being run by Friarsgate Surgery and is a pop-up inside the Badger Farm Community Centre adjacent to Sainsbury's supermarket.

Steve says; “It’s great we have this and I think I speak for many local MPs when I say how impressed we have been with the plans for vaccine roll-out.

“The message is to bear with the NHS as it’s going to take some time and, while we’re waiting, to be super careful and observe the hands, face, space message. We know how this virus will take any chance to hurt us again and I want us to protect the really low rate we now have in Winchester.”

Speaking ahead of the first review of tiers on 16 December, Steve added; "I’m grateful to the many constituents and businesses who have contacted me ahead of the first review point next week.

“I continue to monitor the figures, speak to the Director of Public Health and Hampshire Hospitals - and in turn Ministers - so they understand the position on the ground in Winchester.

“Our latest 7-day average is just 48 per 100,000 (it was almost 200 this time last month) but the issue remains the big cities nearby and Christmas. Above all I want to see us safely out of tier two into tier one but I want us to stay there as the rate remains low and the vaccine roll-out accelerates.”

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
