Let's finish the job on coal says MP in key post-COP statement

After a busy two weeks in Glasgow, the Prime Minister and COP President were back in the House of Commons for a key statement looking back on the announcements and details of the conference.

Winchester’s MP took the opportunity to highlight announcements and work surrounding coal. The Glasgow Pact calls on countries to accelerate efforts towards the phase down of unabated coal power and phase out of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, while providing targeted support to the poorest and most vulnerable in line with national circumstances and recognising the need for support towards a just transition.

All major coal financing countries have committed to end international coal finance by the end of 2021, with $20 billion in funding to support the transition to clean power.

Speaking the House, Steve said; “The agreement is welcome and the Prime Minister has been very honest, as has the President and said 'of course it could have been better'. But I wonder if he'd concur on coal, the direction of travel is now crystal clear and the pressure on India and China and the others from coal addicted nations, is only going to increase now.

So will he commit his government to use every resource that we have at our disposals, to finish the job on coal?”

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, responded saying; “He's totally right and the way to finish the job on coal is to show the countries that are having difficulties powering past coal, that the technology does exist and using our new country platforms to bring in the private sector and to help us fix it. That's what’s going to happen.”

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
