Four children from central Winchester have planned a sponsored cycle this weekend (2nd and 3rd April) to help raise money for Ukrainian children fleeing war.

After learning about the situation in eastern Europe the four Westgate school students stepped up to the challenge to raise money for UNICEF’s appeal. The cycle will take place over two days on the Isle of Wight, spanning a total distance of 50km.

Sofia (11), Noah (7), Josh (8) and Harry (8) are all looking forward to the challenge and said; “We are all friends from where we live in Winchester with a love for riding our bikes. We saw what is happening in Ukraine, and we wanted to do something to help.

It needs to be hard because children like us in Ukraine are going through something much harder right now, so we are going to try and complete the 50km Red Squirrel Trail on the Isle of Wight. We are hoping to raise as much money as we can for those in need.

Some of our little brothers and sisters, Rose and Albie aged 5/6 are taking part too, just maybe not the full 50km.”

Local MP, Steve Brine, has wished the children luck, after their parents reached out to him for support. Mr Brine said; “I love this idea and fair play to the kids for doing something so positive. I hope they have great fun and raise a few pounds for the DEC while they’re at it. We all look forward to seeing the pictures.”

Donations can be sent to the children via their Just Giving page here; https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rideforukraine-2022?utm_term=4WWPPM6bK

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
