Pupils from Compton All Saints Primary School had the opportunity to quiz their local MP, Steve Brine, on local and national issues during his visit to the village school.

The children’s questions covered a variety of topics, including recycling in Winchester, local support for Ukraine, what makes a good Prime Minister and the best thing about being an MP.

Steve spent the morning dipping into each class at Compton to chat to different age groups and meet the school’s Green Team. After his visit, the MP said, “I really enjoyed my time at Compton Primary, as always the children were well prepared with their questions, taking on the challenge confidently and eloquently.”

“This is one of the best parts of my job and I always look forward to engaging with the leaders of tomorrow. I hope to host a group from Compton in Parliament soon.”

Allison Driver, the headteacher at Compton All Saints, added; “It was great to have Steve back in school. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to ask him about his role and learn more about life in the House of Commons. “

The Winchester and Chandler’s Ford MP also took the opportunity to speak with staff, whilst having a coffee in the staffroom. Mr Brine heard about the challenges facing rural schools and the impact on budgets from the ‘Fairer Funding Formula’.

Staff members were also keen to highlight nation-wide issues re provision for children with SEND and the impact this is having on their long-term outcomes.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
