Twyford’s telephone boxes have been receiving a new lick of paint from a dedicated group of volunteers, as they get a second lease at life as community libraries.

Winchester and Chandler’s Ford MP, Steve Brine, dropped by to hear about the project from two volunteers, Councillor Sue Cook and Dr Ingrid Percival. After seeing the project, Steve said; “I’m absolutely loving the work being done by Sue, Ingrid and so many others, who are transforming the old red phone box into a new community bookshare. This is the big society alive and well.”

Twyford Parish Council has purchased the red phone box, along with another similar one at Northfields, from Community Heart Beat with the aim to spruce them up for their new use. The council have put forward funds to replace the glass, secure some new red paint and install some signage.

Winchester City and Twyford Parish Councillor, Sue Cook, speaking about the project, said; “This has been a real community project at heart and it’s always lovely to see the village come together for something like this. Thank you so much to Ingrid Percival for letting me join in with this project and a special thanks to Roger Salvetti, Daryl Henry and Helen Smith of the telephone box restoration team.”

“The finishing touches are being done on this site with our attention turning to the box at Northfields, where we are hoping to house a defibrillator.”

If you are local to the area and would like to get involved in the project, contact Councillor Sue Cook at [email protected].

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
