The Government has unveiled new plans to tackle the threat of rising energy costs this Autumn, during a special debate in the House of Commons.
Members of Parliament from both sides of the House listened intently as the new Prime Minister announced measures that include a ‘Energy Price Guarantee’ meaning a typical UK household will now pay up to an average £2,500 a year on their energy bill for the next two years.
Saving the average household at least £1,000 a year based on current energy prices from October and is in addition to the £400 energy bills discount for all households.
Steve Brine, Member of Parliament for Winchester and Chandler’s Ford, welcomed the measures outlined by the Government frontbench and sough confirmation on Net Zero commitments asking; “Can she confirm that the plans are primarily about domestic supply rather than imported reliance and therefore in line with the commitments, the important commitments, we made at COP26 in Glasgow and the path to Net Zero that we made in our manifesto three years ago.”
Liz Truss sought to reinforce the Government’s backing of Net Zero targets saying; “I am completely committed to Net Zero by 2050” through “delivering a stable environment, that gives investors the confidence to back gas as part of our transition to Net Zero.”
The Prime Minister confirmed that the moratorium on extracting shale gas would end, which would see gas “flowing as soon as six months, where there is local support for it”.
There was also announcements around ‘Great British Nuclear’ which puts the UK on a path to deliver up to a quarter of its electricity generation with nuclear by 2050.
Going further the PM said; “ As a result of these steps on shale and on nuclear and the acceleration of renewables, I am today setting a new ambition for our country.
Far from being dependent on the global energy market and the actions maline actors we will make sure that the UK is a net energy exporter by 2040, and my Right Honourable Friend, the Business Secretary, will set out a plan in the next two months to make sure we achieve this.”
