Local MP Steve Brine visited Winchester College (Friday April 19) to take an exclusive look at their state-of-art new sports centre.

The new facility, located between the playing fields on Kingsgate Park and Norman Road, is being constructed as three 'pavilions'; the fitness centre, sports hall and swimming pool.

The College hopes to have use of the new Sports Centre from this Summer with the swimming pool to be opened later this year. This will include the double-sized sports hall incorporating a climbing wall, indoor cricket, badminton, futsal, volleyball, tennis and netball courts. In addition, there are six squash courts, six fives courts, the new Dojo gym and the exercise and dance studios.

Steve Brine said: “This is a really impressive upgrade to the College’s sports facilities and I know it’s being delivered somewhat later than planned but from what I saw it will be well worth the wait.

“It was useful for me, not least because I know it’s had a huge impact on neighbouring residents who’ve stoically put up with a lot during the build, to see inside as the project nears its completion. I am extremely grateful to new Headmaster, Elizabeth Stone, the on-site team at Kier and everyone for giving me such a warm welcome and explaining how this has all come together.”

During the visit, Steve also joined a ‘Div’ class where students were discussing cyber threats to our democracy. And he joined a group of students from the sixth form who will shortly finish their education at the College for morning coffee and sausage rolls at the Headmasters house in Kingsgate Street.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
