The Prime Minister, speaking on Monday morning at the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) conference in London, said that there was a 'strong moral case' for the UK keeping its word on aid, despite the economic situation that faces Britain.
GAVI currently vaccinates children against preventable diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhoea in 19 countries, but has a shortfall of £2.3b in covering 26 other countries which need help.
Save the Children had described the conference, which was jointly hosted with Bill Gates of Microsoft, as a 'make or break' opportunity for millions of young children.
Steve Brine said: "The Prime Minister makes the point about a 'strong moral case' for sticking to our guns on aid. He is absolutely right here, and has my full support. We really do punch above our weight in pushing vital action like this, and I am extremely proud to be part of a Parliament that will really make a difference for millions of children.
"I am extremely hopeful that by the end of the GAVI summit enough donations will have been raised to hit the target so the organisation can make rapid progress in the remaining countries where this life-saving help is so desperately needed."
