MPs push for foreign lorry charging

Steve Brine has joined MPs pushing for foreign lorries to be charged a daily rate for using British roads.

The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP has long campaigned for the move, which would help struggling UK hauliers who have to pay large tolls when they drive in Europe.

Under the proposals, all HGVs will pay the charge, but there will be a corresponding reduction in vehicle excise duty for British HGVs, due to the fact that, by law, the scheme cannot discriminate between UK-registered vehicles and vehicles from elsewhere in the EU.

Steve said: "This move is designed to create a level playing field for British hauliers as they are required to pay for using many roads in continental Europe. The amount of the charge would depend on the size of the HGV. In order to circumnavigate EU law, UK hauliers will also pay the fee but, crucially, will be refunded by being let off other taxes!"

The charge for a 12-ton truck will be £10 a day, £50 a week, £100 a month or £1,000 a year. Vehicles entering the country would be monitored via cameras and roadside checks, with drivers who failed to comply with charges facing one-the-spot fines.
