The gathering, which is organised by Lord Patrick McCormack, has become an annual event for MPs representing some of the great cathedral cities of England and this session heard from the Culture Minister who spoke and took questions from those attending.
Winchester MP Steve Brine said: "This has become an annual event and it's actually really useful for those of us fortunate enough to represent some of the great cathedral cities. Each is different of course, with unique qualities and challenges but there is a lot of common ground and I think it's useful to get this group of people together. We were lucky to have Culture Minister Ed Vaizey join us this year which gave the Deans chance to question him on a range of policy issues affecting these wonderful buildings."
James Atwell added: "There is always a sense of thrill about visiting the Houses of Parliament and meeting your MP, especially when being given time by him and by those who make decisions for our nation to express your own concerns and perspective. Cathedrals (with no State aid) are part of our national heritage and visited by over 25% of the population in any one year – so it is really helpful to have a meeting with Parliamentarians to discuss issues as varied as national celebrations and VAT. We went away listened to and affirmed. Thank you, Steve".
