MPs discussed the UK's drugs policy on Thursday 30th October following the release of a government report which found no obvious link between tough laws and levels of drug use.

The debate, called by Caroline Lucas MP, was well attended, and heard from a number of MP, from all parties, who questioned current policy.

Steve Brine, who is a key member of the Home Office team, was present for the entire debate, and said: "This is an area that has held great interest for me for a long time now, and it was fascinating to see many MPs from across the House, and with differing political traditions, seeming to agree that a re-think on our drugs policy is needed."

The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP has worked with a number of campaigners in the Commons over the last few years, including the Angelus Foundation, which battles the dangers of legal highs, and has spoken to a number of constituents who are extremely concerned about legal and illegal drug usage.

Steve continued: "As the Minister, Norman Baker, said in the House, the genie is out of the bottle on this now, and as an MP who has always sought to examine evidence rather than tabloid headlines, I am positive we've moved forward today.

"I don't believe our current drug laws are fit for purpose. It's not about being soft on drug use but it should be about a smart approach to treating addiction instead of simply locking people up and hoping prison cures them."
