Steve Brine was the guest speaker at Winchester Friends of the Earth.

Prospective MP, Steve Brine, was the guest speaker at Winchester Friends of the Earth this week.

The group, which holds its monthly meeting in the United Reform Church on Jewry Street, has become something of a rite of passage for politicians in the city and asked Steve to address their March meeting (Tuesday 11th March 2008).

Steve Brine spoke for about 30 minutes and outlined Conservative plans to bring a decentralised energy revolution to the UK.  He also outlined the response of Conservative MPs in Parliament to the Climate Change Bill and his own Green Winchester campaign. The speech was followed by about 45 minutes of questions and debate when topics ranging from transport to local Winchester independent shops were covered.

Speaking after the meeting, Steve said; “It is the job of groups such as FoE to put pressure on politicians in the area they care about.  That will often mean taking positions and taking action that go further - sometimes much further - than we are able to go but they are a vital part of this country’s democracy and I was honoured to be asked to speak to the group.  Winchester FoE are a lively bunch who care about the planet and the city we all live in, I want to thank them for their courtesy and the very warm welcome they gave to me.”
