Steve Brine joins the applause as planning inspector dismisses planned development in Conservation area.

Residents in the Blue Ball Hill area of Winchester City Centre are celebrating after learning that an appeal has been dismissed to build homes on land adjacent St. John’s Croft.

Prospective Winchester MP Steve Brine has worked with residents for almost two years to resist the plans which would have seen 14 new dwellings (9 houses and 5 flats) with parking and vastly changed access arrangements on the site, just off Magdalen Hill.

The appeal was made by Sarum Developments Ltd against the decision of Winchester City Council’s Planning Committee from November 2008.

Steve Brine said; “For once common sense reigns.  The campaign group has done brilliantly to present a sensible, coherent case to the inspectorate who I am pleased to see they took it all on-board. We said from the start that any development in a Conservation area such as Blue Ball Hill should positively enhance it and this plan would simply not have done that.”

Steve is pictured (back in 2007) with residents in the area opposed to the development.
