Steve Brine maiden speech

New MP Steve Brine speaks about health, planning and defence in his first speech to the House of Commons.

Winchester MP Steve Brine made his maiden speech in Parliament today (Monday 21 June 2010).

In line with tradition, the new MP praised his predecessor Mark Oaten who he wished well for the future.

Speaking in the first defence debate of the new Parliament, Mr Brine gave passionate support to the army’s presence in Winchester and touched on two if his priority areas, health and planning. He made a passionate case for the future of District General Hospitals including the Royal Hampshire County in Winchester and said he was elected with a strong mandate to protect services at the hospital.

He said; “Making your maiden speech is a nerve-racking experience, even if you are very used to public speaking elsewhere.  I had to wait almost six hours to be called but it was worth it.  I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and relished the chance to speak unchallenged about the wonderful constituency I represent across Winchester and Chandler’s Ford.”
