The city centre came to a virtual standstill on Wednesday June 23 as Winchester came out in force to witness the return of 11 Light Brigade from Afghanistan.

New MP Steve Brine joined the Duchess of Cornwall, hundreds of local schoolchildren and thousands of local residents in the glorious sunshine as the Brigade marched from St Cross down the High Street and onto the Broadway before attending a service of thanksgiving and remembrance at the Cathedral.

The homecoming was big news nationwide, with news crews and reporters broadcasting the event for the major news channels.

Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "As expected Winchester did these brave men and women proud. It was an honour to welcome them home in our city.

"We find it deeply distressing to hear one or two names of the fallen read out in the House of Commons but to hear 64 listed today during the Cathedral service was very sad.

"If it were ever needed, today reminded us all what unfailing service our forces give to this country for the greater good."
