Winchester MP warmly welcomes news that the cafe at Winchester's Military Museum Visitor Centre will be renamed.

Concerns had been raised with the MP at the original name ‘Falling Plates’ which many in The Royal Green Jackets felt was an insult to their regiment.  Former soldiers say the name is a derogatory nickname for heavy casualties suffered in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.  They said the term — which refers to the stationary targets at a shooting range — is disrespectful to those who have given their lives for their country.

On 10 September 2010, Winchester Military Museums (WMM) Executive Committee considered and agreed a request from The Royal Green Jackets Association Management Committee to change the name of the cafe.  It will be renamed Cafe Peninsula with effect from 1 October 2010.

Steve said: “I think this is the right decision and I applaud the team at the Military Museum for making the change.  We all make mistakes but the committee have clearly listened to representations from many local residents and former soldiers and I hope we can now put this behind us and move on.”
