The organisation has recently published new research that details the economic, social and environmental benefits a UK-wide deposit refund scheme would provide. A small deposit would be placed on glass, aluminium and plastic drinks containers to encourage people to return them for recycling, rather than throwing them away as litter or in a bin.
Speaking after the reception, in Portcullis House, Steve said: “I’m more than happy to add my weight to the ‘Have we got the bottle?’ campaign.
“The benefits of this UK-wide scheme are very clear, and I know that CPRE are delighted that 3000 people have already petitioned Defra’s Secretary of State, to urge Caroline Spelman MP to consider their research as part of the department’s Review of Waste Policies.”
The Government's response to the consultation on waste will be published in Spring 2011.
