Steve Brine dropped into Jewry Street on Monday lunchtime to meet staff and customers of a new city bank.

Handelsbanken is a Swedish creation, established in 1871, and is a full service bank for both personal and corporate customers. Globally, it has 11,000 employees and operates in 22 countries, with a strongly decentralised structure, basing operations on the customer's requirements.

Over 30 customers, all of whom must be local, were in attendance as Winchester MP Steve Brine was asked to cut the ribbon at the official opening of the branch, which is situated on the corner of North Walls and Jewry Street.

Steve Brine said: "I knew almost nothing about this bank before today but it's been quite an eye-opener to hear how they operate. It's very clear to me what a self-confident company this is providing a genuinely different service in the area.

"From talking to customers at the opening event, and some future customers, it's clear to me they value the bespoke banking experience on offer and are prepared to pay for it.

"I think they will do very well in Winchester."
