The Government spent the last few months gathering information and evidence and visiting disabled people in care homes to find out directly from them how their mobility needs are actually met in practice.
Ministers found a complex set of overlapping responsibilities had evolved which allowed different local authorities to deal with the issue of funding of mobility in care homes in very different ways. Some practices led to overlaps in funding.
Minister for Disabled People, Maria Miller MP, said: "I have always been clear that I would not make any change that would stop disabled people from getting out and about... after listening to the strong concerns of disabled people and their organisations, I have taken action and decided not to remove the payment."
Steve Brine added: "I am delighted to hear this news, which shows that the government continues to listen to MPs and our constituents. I am under no illusions whatsoever as to the difficulties faced by this horrendous debt crisis, which dominates all our lives at present. However, in these circumstances I am pleased to see a positive, evidence-based outcome."
