Steve Brine has paid tribute to the emergency services after a fire broke out at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital on Friday 9th December.

Thankfully, there were no casualties in the blaze, which took place in the MRI unit on Romsey Road at just after 4pm.

A number of fire engines were deployed as patients were evacuated to alternative parts of the hospital while the city centre ground to a halt.

Acting chief executive of the hospital trust, Dr Chris Gordon, said: "My understanding is that we've had a fire in the MRI and CT scanner room and maybe in the roof of the building.

"We have evacuated the X-ray department, accident and emergency and five operating theatres and the intensive care units.

"There was surgery going on at the time and those patients have also had to be evacuated.

"As far as I know no one has been injured and no one has come to harm as a consequence of that evacuation."

Local MP Steve Brine said: "I know Dr Gordon and his team have really robust serious incident plans in place and it seems they were carried out calmly and efficiently when the fire broke out.

"I would like to pay great tribute to the emergency services who did Winchester proud as always as well as the staff at the RHCH, many of whom worked through the night to deal with the unfolding situation."
