Steve Brine joined parents, staff, governors and even students at Westgate School on Tuesday 8th May, as representatives from the county council discussed the new primary school campaign.

The Winchester MP, who is spearheading the campaign locally, addressed the meeting following the introduction from County Councillor Roy Perry, who leads Education across Hampshire, before a series of presentations from officers and a detailed Q&A session.

Steve discussed the urgent need to bring high quality primary places to the city, and highlighted the number of worried parents who had got touch with him since he was elected two years ago. He also covered the range of 'Options' set out currently, and various considerations, not least surrounding 4-16 provision at Westgate, the appropriateness of alternative sites and the wider effects of admission flow across Winchester and the effect on Secondary schools.

Speaking after the event, Steve said: "This was an important meeting and it's clear there are as many questions as answers arising out of this consultation. I thought we aired the concept of 4-16 all-through provision well and cleared up some of the myths as well as covered off why certain other sites in the city are not appropriate for a new-build primary school.

"I think there remain many questions about Option B in the consultation and would stress that I think the county council need to flesh that out some more to enable my constituents to make a really informed choice between Option A and B."
