The first step in securing a safer future for Highbridge in Colden Common may have been secured after Hampshire County Council announced a new traffic island at a set of busy junctions.
Last year, Steve Brine MP joined forces with Cllr Richard Izard and a number of local residents to address a host of safety concerns around Highbridge Road, Church Lane and Kiln Lane, and they have cautiously welcomed this initial step.
Steve said: "We will give the island a chance, but I think we're all clear it must be accompanied by a reduction in the speed limit. This is, in every sense of the term, just a staging post to a much safer Highbridge Road in the medium term."
While no dates for the island, which will go at the Church Lane and Kiln Lane junctions, have been set, HCC has confirmed funding and is putting together a design plan.
Cllr Richard Izard said: "It's not exactly what we wanted, but it's a case of picking our battles. It's better than nothing and something of a success."
