Steve Brine has welcomed the first edition of Winchester Today, a new free paper for local people covering the city and surrounding area.

The monthly newspaper has been launched by local journalist Kevin Gover, and covers a range of local news, features, culture and sport.

The first edition leads on the Hat Fair, coming up this month, and also covers the upcoming Olympic Torch Relay, the launch of Safer Places and Winchester's link with the Falklands.

Steve said: "As a former journalist myself I am delighted to welcome Winchester Today to our city and the surrounding area. I know Kevin well, and from what I hear he has assembled a fantastic team around him.

"Of course, Winchester is already very well served locally, but I am sure Winchester Today will add to the fabric of our city, and wish Kevin and the team all the very best."
