Following weeks of inclement weather, a local solar company has made a promise that customers will receive a cheque for every rainy day throughout August.

SunSmart Energy Ltd is based in Itchen Abbas, and goes back nearly a decade. Director Matt Thornington said: "As I run a solar company this weather is doubly depressing for me as people incorrectly believe that the panels don't generate unless it's sunny. Therefore, the phone's pretty quiet on rainy days.

"I am now prepared to promise that every day it rains in August, any customer that we install for in August will get a cheque from me for £20 for each day that month that it rains on their new solar panels.

"In theory that could leave me £620 out of pocket per customer, but I'm hoping August won't be that much of a washout!"

Steve Brine said: "I have known Matt for a while now, and can really see his frustration here. I do know that he is exhibiting at the upcoming Fordingbridge Show this weekend, and the New Forest Show next week, so here's hoping the weather clears up by then."
