Steve Brine has backed a new scheme looking to secure the services of some young apprentices over the next two years, following a visit to Alresford on Friday 11th October.

The Alresford MP visited The Watercress Company, based in Bighton, and found out more about the scheme, which they are running in conjunction with Sparsholt College.

Tom Amery, Managing Director, said: "We are very pleased to be working with Sparsholt College and are offering this exciting opportunity for up to four young, enthusiastic individuals, with an interest in working on the land and in its associated environment."

The aim of the scheme is for the apprentice to get an opportunity to experience all aspects of the business, from distribution and transport to growing watercress and land crops such as lettuces, chards, and brassicas so that they can indicate their preference at the end of the two years before being placed within the organisation.

Tom added: "The apprentices will receive a competitive remuneration during their training period and we are hoping that they will go on to have long and successful careers in the company.

Steve Brine added; "The Watercress industry is something I am really proud of in my constituency so it was excellent to visit The Watercress Company and learn a little more about the business. We discussed some local issues, some future plans, and of course these fantastic apprenticeship opportunities, and I know from my dealings with Sparsholt College that they have chosen just the right partners.

"We also covered the vexed issue of lorry movements into and through Alresford itself and agreed to work sensibly together on a strictly evidence-based footing to see how we can work with the town and its local representatives."
