Winchester MP Steve Brine spoke live to Sky News on Friday lunchtime as the broadcaster visited the city to share our story with the nation.

Steve spoke to Lorna Dunkley from Water Lane in central Winchester about how we were coping with the unprecedented and sustained rainfall, and how the whole community had come together.

Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "With Radio 4 yesterday and Sky News today, the national focus really is on us here in Winchester right now, which only demonstrates how seriously most of us are taking this situation.

"I was so pleased to be able to explain just how well local residents, councils and agencies are playing this extremely bad hand, and also how we had even gone off-piste over in the Itchen Valley with a huge roll of the dice in flooding some farmland in order to save around 150 properties in the city centre.

"I am sure some of my constituents wish they could just pack their bags and disappear on holiday right now just to escape this avalanche of problems, but the reality for families like mine is that just is not an option and we need to all we can to protect our neighbours, friends and key infrastructure."

Steve was speaking as he was heading into a busy surgery in the city, and he said it was no surprise the session was even busier than usual.

"Surgery is teeming this afternoon, and sadly, it was very fitting that the broadcast happened in heavy rain. We are of course looking anxiously at the forecasts over the weekend and into next week."
