The service was organised by Churches Together Winchester as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which runs from 18th to 25th January. It is a time when Christians are called to pray for the unity of the Church.
As part of this year's service, the churches celebrated and gave thanks for the work of a number of local organisations, including Winchester Basics Bank, Street Pastors, Winchester Churches Night Shelter and Friends of the Family.
Chairman of CTW, Nigel Hemming, organised the event and played as part of his band from the Winchester Vineyard Church through the service.
Steve Brine read a passage from John (4 1-24) during the service and alongside Canon Paul Townsend received symbolic items from all the charities being celebrated. He also addressed a reception in the Undercroft before the service for representatives of the local organisations during which he spoke candidly about his own faith and the way he sees it working in the city of Winchester.
Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "This was a lovely ceremony, and really celebrated the warmth and compassion members of churches across Winchester share together. I was touched to be asked to speak, not only about my work, but how my faith refreshes me and helps me as a Member of Parliament."
The preacher was Dr Paula Gooder, Canon Theologian, Birmingham Cathedral and Guilford Cathedral who gave a comprehensive talk about John's telling of Jesus and the Samaritan woman in his 4th book.
