Steve's Team Winchester headed out to Worthy Down this morning (Saturday 14 February 2015) to meet residents.

The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP spent time discussing a range of national issues with constituents living on the predominantly army housing estate.

Steve says; "By its' very nature Worthy Down sees a heavy turnover of residents so it's always a great chance to meet new constituents when visiting the area.

"For obvious reasons the main topic of conversation was defence policy and anxiety around what a future SDSR might bring during the course of the next Parliament.

"As usual I found a group of highly committed public servants, and their partners, who are exceptionally proud of the work they do for our country and it was a chance to thank them as well.

"It was also a useful chance for me to listen to views which I want to feedback to my colleagues in Government."

Some key defence facts:

  • The Conservative-led Government inherited a £38bn black hole at the Ministry of Defence in 2010
  • A comprehensive Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) was held in 2010; the first in more than a decade
  • Steve Brine lobbied hard on behalf of Worthy Down as part of the SDSR and has welcomed £250m Project Wellesley which will transform the site into a modern defence training college
  • Even after five difficult years and reductions in Government spending, Britain's retains easily the fifth largest defence budget in the world
  • Britain is currently spending the NATO agreed 2% of GDP on defence. Local MP Steve Brine is lobbying for that commitment to be put into UK law
