Steve Brine took young Emily into town on Saturday 27th April as they took part in Cycle Winchester 2019.

The Winchester MP was delighted to back the event once again, which campaigns to make Winchester better by bike.

Their aim is to create a better Winchester by promoting cycling as a convenient, healthy and inexpensive way to get around the city, as well as campaigning for improved provision for cyclists. In so doing, Cycle Winchester also hope to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in order to make Winchester a more enjoyable place to live, work and visit.

The Mass Ride had riders from around the city to converge on the central one-way system for two processional laps, before finishing at Abbey Gardens for a snack and a refreshing drink. There were also free bike safety checks, courtesy of Bespoke Biking; and a Celebration Photograph.

Steve Brine said: “This was our third mass ride and it was bigger than ever. Such fun to be involved again and lovely to have Emily with me this year after missing before with tonsillitis!

“The event is important but action speaks louder than wheels and we need to see more than a few yards of dedicated, safe, cycle ways in the District if we’re going to turn Winchester into the cycle city it should.

“That is vital if parents like me are going to have the confidence to do this much more often with small children. We need them to see cycling every bit as natural as walking or getting in the car.”

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
