Steve Brine visited Winchester Cathedral on Friday 17th May for the opening of Kings & Scribes: The Birth of a Nation.
The event marked the culmination of an ambitious project, which began in 2012, to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our rich heritage.
Funded by generous supporters, including the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the three-level exhibition in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey of over 1000 years of our history.
There will be four galleries to explore, A Scribe’s Tale, The Birth of a Nation, Decoding the Stones and The Mezzanine, and the exhibition is predicted to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city.
Steve Brine MP said: “I have, over many years, seen this amazing new exhibition conceived and slowly come together. What our Cathedral team have achieved here, inside the ancient building, is nothing short of remarkable.
“It stands as a beacon to modern day engineering in a historic setting, a passion for the past and underscores Winchester as the true birthplace of the English nation. Anyone who visits will be blown away but those of us who live here will, I predict, be proud as punch.”
