Steve Brine hosted a special cancer session in Parliament on Wednesday 10th July as he met up once again with Cancer52.

Steve worked with Cancer52, which is an umbrella alliance of nearly 100 organisations, during his time as Public Health Minister, and was delighted to host the drop-in session which involved meeting patients with rare and less common cancers.

He said: “We heard on a range of issues and heard suggestions for improvements on diagnosis, treatment and care that they’d like to see. We have survival rates among the best we’ve ever seen in England which is great but we need to ensure the experience patients have, from diagnosis to all-clear and beyond, is as good as it can be. The cliff edge of an all-clear can be very steep for many people as the embrace of the NHS falls away and I lost count of the number of times I heard that during my time as the Minister.

“I am committed to working with Cancer 52 and all the charities working in this space from the backbenches and putting in place the huge amount I learnt from my time in office for the benefit of people living with, and beyond, cancer.”

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
